Each year, federal agencies offer hundreds of opportunities for small businesses to fund high-risk, high-reward research and development efforts through the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) grant programs.
These grants offer a phased approach to developing your ideas - with commercialization as the ultimate goal. Phase I awards - typically in the range of $80,000 to $150,000 - allow you to conduct a feasibility report and some very early prototyping. Once the necessary due diligence is completed, you may be invited to submit a Phase II grant which could get you to your first real prototype, with approximately $300,000 to $750,000 in funding available.
